How to Change the Battery in a VW Key

Man Holding Key Fob

If your VW key fob has lost range or isn’t responding as quickly as it used to, it’s time to replace the battery. You can schedule service to have the battery replaced by a professional, or save money by purchasing a replacement battery and changing out the old one yourself with just a few simple steps. In the guide below, join the Suntrup Volkswagen team to learn what supplies are needed and how to change battery in a VW key fob at home in St Louis.

Prepare to Replace Your VW Key Fob Battery

Learning how to change the battery in your VW key is definitely worth your time, and the process itself is simple once you have what you need. First, make sure you have a flathead screwdriver and a small jeweler’s screwdriver. To prevent damage to the key fob casing, wrap the head of the flathead screwdriver in a piece of tape.

Second, you need to purchase the correct VW key replacement battery from a VW parts center or St Peters-area hardware store. Most VW key fobs require a 3-volt circular “watch” battery. The back of your key fob should be marked with the battery type you need. You can also check the original battery itself for the size and voltage.

VW Key Battery Replacement: Step-by-Step

Grab your screwdriver and 3-volt battery, and follow these steps to change the battery in your VW key fob:

  1. Remove the small screw on the VW key fob with your jeweler’s screwdriver.
  2. Using the tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver, gently pry apart the two key fob halves. To ensure that the contents and external buttons don’t come loose, hold the fob together as you pry it apart.
  3. Find the battery, and observe the positive and negative orientation. Carefully remove it without touching the terminals. Oils from your skin can cause corrosion, shortening the life of the battery.
  4. Correctly line up the positive (+) and negative (-) and insert the new battery.
  5. Realign the battery halves and gently squeeze the key fob until they snap together.
  6. Replace the small screw.
