What Is the Difference Between Atlas Cross Sport & Atlas?

Like we touched on a moment ago, the core difference between the Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport models that most St Louis motorists will immediately note is the space provided inside. With the full-size Atlas, there’s seating for seven – that’s standard. On the other hand, in the Atlas Cross Sport, you will find spots for up to five including the driver. This size difference also lends to a cargo-space advantage for the 2022 Atlas over the Atlas Cross Sport, which we’ll discuss in a minute.

Aside from this difference in size, the Atlas Cross Sport also has a couple design differences from its sibling as well. For example, comparing the two side-by-side reveals some exterior design differences such as the appearance of a mock front-skid-plate on the Atlas Cross Sport and significant differences in the appearance of the front and rear diffusers. All in all, both are fairly similar and are great SUVs for the modern family. However, with respect to the ways that they *are* different, a decision is still to be made by shoppers.

2022 Atlas vs. Atlas Cross Sport: Performance

In truth, the 2022 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport both have nearly identical performance statistics thanks to their shared reliance on the tried and tested 2.0L 4-Cylinder Turbocharged engine from VW. Paired with a reliable and smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission, this drivetrain can achieve up to 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque – which makes for peppy driving no matter which model you choose. Both vehicles offer the same fuel efficiency rating, a respectable low-to-mid-twenties figure, depending on city or highway driving.

Looking for a little more power? This is no problem since both vehicles also offer the option to upgrade to the available 3.6L V6 engine, which doesn’t come with a turbo but still produces some fun performance figures such as 276 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. Also available to both platforms is the 4MOTION® / Active Control system, which enhances off-road and on-road performance in snow and more!

Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport vs. Atlas: Interior Space

For as many similarities as there are between the 2022 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, there’s a striking difference that will determine which one most buyers take home: interior size and seating capacity. More seating, more cargo space, and more leg room can all be found in the full-size 2022 Volkswagen Atlas. The simple reality of it, though? If you don’t need that extra space, you may as well opt for the smaller version, right? In either case, it’s nice that VW is providing an option for either family size.
